On the Road to Running Recovery

At the beginning of 2018 I set myself a goal to overcome my Love-Hate Relationship with Running. On 16 June 2018 I fell off a bicycle injuring my foot which derailed my entire fitness journey. Now 18 months later I’m on the road to running recovery.

My injury

It was my 3rd or 4th (my memory fails me at this very moment) bicycle riding lesson. Lessons were going exceptionally well and Marc had taken me down to the track to ride. I was riding like an absolute champ and for a split second lost my concentration, crashing into the ground. The result was a double fraction, 3 sprains and a tear to my right foot.

It only took me 3 lessons to ride a bicycle.

The set-back with regard to my running journey

It took me over an hour to complete a 5km walk in January 2018. 6 months later I was able to run a 5km in 30 minutes. This was a massive achievement for me and I was exceptionally proud of myself. I was at the point of progressing to running 10km races and then my injury happened. It was emotionally, mentally and physically draining. I spent a year in a moonboot, a month in a cast and a few weeks in a wheelchair. Nothing really helped but the fact is a foot injury is not childsplay.

My injury has taken a long time to heal with me having to fully rest it in the later part of 2019. It seems that I may have damaged a lymph node or nerve in the process. This will however be determined in the next few weeks. Irrespective of that I have plans.

More time in nature, more family time, more fun, more what works for us We are aiming to complete 30 My Runs or Park Runs. Now that we have achieved diamond status on Vitality we definitely want to maintain that. Also loved the Riversands venue. People are lovely, its pet friendly and a beautiful environment @discovery_vitality_life @myrunsa @parkrunsa @riversandsfarm #fitlikemummy #southafricablogger #southafrica #bopo #effyourbeautystandards #bodypositive #selfloveisthebestlove #bodypositivephotographer #selflovejourney #bodyacceptance #boldncurvy #bodyposi #bodypositivity #allbodiesaregoodbodies #embraceyourself #empowered #empoweringwomen #celebratemycurves #flmcloset #fearlesslyauthentic #zerofucksgiven #fit #fitlife #fitfam #myrun #parkrun #walking #familyfitness #family #picoftheday

New year, new decade and another opportunity to push myself to step outside of my comfort zones. While I’m not ready to run, I am ready to walk. As a family we have decided to tackle fitness as a family. Our plan is to go back to basics and start casual 5km runs / walks and where better place to start that by living that Vitality life. So we have collectively agreed to complete 30, 5km walks/run for 2020. Our main goal is to improve our fitness levels and our health.

Truth is “the only person you should strive to be better than is the person you were yesterday”

We have started tracking our times from today and monitor it on a monthly basis. Wish me luck and I will make a point to keep you updated on the status of my foot.

While outr goals are rather basis, we would love to hear about your health and fitness goals for 2020, so don’t forget to drop us a comment

  1. You have a cheerleader in your corner over here for you and the boys to get to your 30 in 20! And knowing the kind of person you are, you’ll get there and more than likely before the end of 2020.

I’m starting my “new year, new me” plans tomorrow when the kids are back at school. I haven’t set goals for the year other than getting to gym daily from Monday – Friday and doing a proper power lifting programme this year. How I’m going to get there… I’ll let you know by the end of the month.

I’m not going to focus on losing weight because from past experience, it is soul destroying and results in me giving up on the joy I have smashing my body in gym daily. Being physically active results in me changing up my eating and fueling my body to get the best out of gym sessions.

I’ll be keeping an eye on you 😉 Don’t be shy to keep me in check too.

Cheers to smashing it this year!
