Review Aha Gateway – Premium 3 Star Hotel

Umhlanga has a multitude of hotels, I however was looking for centrally located accommodation close to the #FitLikeMeZA event.  The aha Gateway ticked all the right boxes and was exactly what Team #FitLikeMeZA needed. Our brief trip to KZN yielded several aha moments, so review aha Gateway coming up.

I wasn’t sure what to expect on my first-ever stay at AHA Gateway, but my expectations were exceeded.  The AHA Hotel & Resort group has several accommodations scattered around the country which I look forward to experiencing.

The aha Gateway

This three-star hotel in Umhlanga offers both business and leisure travellers the ultimate in Durban accommodation. Conveniently attached to The Gateway Theatre of Shopping. Guests can enjoy a unique experience as they explore the local culture through visiting entertainment and dining hotspots.

If you’re looking for conference venues in Umhlanga, the aha Gateway Hotel offers five fully-equipped conference or event venues. This was our plan B in the event that the weather did not hold for our event. Conveniently located close to most of KZN’s tourist hotspots.

Check-In

AHA Gateway is located at the corner of Centenary Boulevard &, Twilight Drive in Umhlanga Ridge.  The hotel’s in walking distance of Gateway Shopping Mall and has a special walkway that links the two.  The undercover parking is a little tricky to find so I’d recommend calling ahead to obtain the directions.  The check-in process went rather smoothly.  Upon arrival I adhered to the hotels Covid-19 protocols and then made my way to my room.

The rooms

I was pleasantly surprised by the attentiveness in terms of Covid-19 protocols.  After each room is cleaned, a sticker is placed over the keyhole to give patrons the comfort that rooms have been thoroughly sanitized.  I stayed in a superior room which is comfortable and spacious.  The massive bathtub which is strategically located adjacent to the king-size bed.  I made sure to take advantage of the opportunity by indulging in some self-care.

Food & drinks

Breakfast’s included, so expect a proper South African breakfast that will not disappoint. Aha Gateway delivered in spades. The delicious breakfasts, perfect cappuccinos and splendid cocktails made aha Gateway our best experience for food and drinks in Umhlanga.

The Bar

The bar’s well stocked and the barmen was fantastic. He oozes charm and friendliness. Let me add again that he made the best cocktails in Umhlanga.

The Pool

The rooftop pool is a vibe all on its own. If it wasn’t for the bad weather I would have definitely made use of the crystal clear pool. I guess I will need to make another trip to aha Umhlanga.

Hospitality

I must make a point to mention the staff I encountered went above-and-beyond.  They were extremely efficient in their duties, friendly and attentive to my every need.

Overall Impression

Overall, the aha Gateway exceeded my expectations.  The comfort and convenience of this hotel made for a fantastic stay.  After spending two nights at the aha Gateway, I can say that I was extremely impressed. The friendliness of the staff and the food was a definite highlight. Only part of my stay that could have been improved upon was the view from the outside deck.  The abandoned WavePark is an eyesore, but completely out of control of the hotel. As they gear up for the festive season, I strongly recommend that you consider staying at the aha Gateway.
