John Dory’s Veganuary Menu

by | Jan 18, 2021 | Eating Out, Food hub | 0 comments

Over the past few years, the month of January has become synonymous with people around the world pledging to eat vegan food for a month. A United Kingdom non-profit organisation runs the annual Veganuary challenge. The aim is to promote and educates people about veganism. Finding plant-based and vegan food has become easier over the years, but eating out is really a challenge. A Fry’s collaboration ensured that the John Dory’s Veganuary Menu is an option.

New Year, New Beginnings

With summer in full swing and the dawn of a new year, there’s no time like the present to jump back onto the healthy bandwagon. Eating more plant-based food has definite health benefits:

  • Better nutrition
  • Weight loss
  • Healthier hearts
  • Lower diabetes risk
  • Reduces cancer risk

John Dory’s Veganuary Menu

Enter the John Dory’s Veganuary menu which is currently available until the end of January 2021. Three new dishes to cater for South Africans who eat plant-based or vegan food.

As a huge Fry’s Family Food Company fan, I popped into their Greenstone branch in the first week of January to sample the new menu. I’m a brutally honest person so I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed by the execution of the new additions to the menu.

The Veganuary Menu Offerings

I love the menu offering for Veganuary and the prawn-style pieces happen to be one of my Favourite Fry’s products.

  • Prawn-Style Tacos @R99 – 2 Mexican yellow corn soft shell tacos filled with Chipotle Fry’s prawn-style strips, lettuce, avo and JD salsa. Served with saffron chutney vegan mayo and chips.
  • Prawn-Style Bowl @R125 – A bowl of Chipotle Fry’s prawn-style strips, bulgur wheat, avo, cucumber, lettuce, chickpeas, lentils, cherry tomatoes. Finished off with a drizzle of saffron chutney vegan mayo.
  • Prawn-Style Sushi Platter @R109 – 4x Prawn-style avalanche with saffron chutney vegan mayo, 4x Prawn-style rainbow rolls, 2x Prawn-style sandwiches.

Excellent Customer Service

I spoke to the manager, who was extremely interested in my feedback. A week later I got a call from Pieter, the owner who had invited me to come back. Explaining that I didn’t expect an invite to come back, but he insisted.

I gave the John Dory’s Veganuary Menu a second chance and …

We popped over to meet Pieter who had taken time out of his busy schedule to dine with us. The long and short of it is that John Dory’s Greenstone is all about customer service and that goes a very very long way with me. It says a lot about a business and it’s the kind of business I will happily support.

Not only did they consider my feedback, they upped the ante. The staff worked on the Veganuary menu and I was not disappointed. So impressed that we have since visited John Dory’s Greenstone twice after that. We have also popped into John Dory’s Mimosa Mall in Bloemfontein. I had the pawn-style bowl at Mimosa. Not usually a salad kind a girl but I thought I’d give it a try.

I can’t express my appreciation enough to Pieter and his team who were absolutely fantastic. John Dory’s Greenstone, has since been added to my list of favourite restaurants in Jozi.

John Dory's Veganuary Sushi
The Tacos & Sushi remains my favourite dishes from the Veganuary Menu

John Dory’s Veganuary Menu is available until the end of January 2021 but I’m crossing my fingers that those dishes become a permanent offering. A big shout out to John Dory’s Greenstone for taking customer service and satisfaction to the next level.

Let me know if you have tried John Dory’s Veganuary Menu and what you thought about the new dishes.

Stay safe lovelies
