Cosy Cottage Getaway in the Midlands

December 2018 saw us embark on a family road trip, with the Midlands in KwaZulu Natal being our first stop. We were fortunate enough to be hosted by the Robertson’s at the gorgeous Mill Cottages based in the oh so beautiful Rosetta.  The cosy Mill Cottages are located on lush premises, along the banks of the Mooi River. The little town of Mooi River is aptly named, as it is indeed “baie mooi” (mooi is an Afrikaans word meaning pretty).

Upon arrival at Mill Cottages we received a warm welcome from owners Don and Janice Robertson who showed us around and then left us to settle in. There are two self-catering cottages available. We stayed in the four-sleeper cottage, but there is also a two sleeper. Both self-catering cottages are fully equipped with kitchen, lounge and dining area. So, if you are looking for peace and quiet that may also involve a digital detox then Mill Cottages is the place for you. To my children’s horror there was no television, but the lack of one was a blessing in disguise. Couch potato life was instantly replaced with leisurely walks down to the river, reading books under trees and playing fetch with fur babies Cleo and Pie. Even though there are dogs on the premises, it is important to note that Mill Cottages is not a pet friendly establishment. Our evenings were spent braaing while we sat on the porch playing board games. Each cottage is equipped with a wood burning fireplace, but we didn’t get the opportunity to cosy up around it as it wasn’t cold enough.

During our short stay at Mill Cottages, we did venture out a little to explore Nottingham Road. There are several fabulous places to visit within driving distance from the Cottages that we highly recommend :-

Piggly Wiggly – perfect spot that’s home to a variety of local shops, a lovely coffee shop and a pizza place as well as various activities for families and friends.
Blueberry Café – an idyllic little café perfect for breakfast with amazing views. Breakfast was delicious. Also known for their famous blueberry cheesecake, it’s a must visit.
Notties Brewery – pop into a thriving micro-brewery for some gin and beer tastings. Perfectly situated on the deck beneath the trees, these tasting experiences made for the perfect afternoon.
Chocolate Heaven – the name says it all. If you love chocolate, then this is a stop you can’t miss. Make a point to try out the original chocolate Dippingz® Experience.

There are many more wonderful places to visit in the area and that’s what makes Mill Cottages the perfect accommodation spot. I have to admit that our stay was food for the soul. It presented the perfect opportunity to kick back, relax and recharge. Our road trip saw us stay at 6 different accommodation venues and when we recapped our road trip, even the kids chose Mill Cottages as their favourite place to stay. Needless to say that we will visit this hidden gem on a regular basis.
