The announcement that takeout and meals from restaurants for delivery would be allowed during level 4 of lock-down, had thousands of people rushing to order their favourite takeout. Ordering takeout for delivery during the pandemic can result in increased apprehensions and paranoia reaching an all time high. So the big question is … Are food deliveries safe in the time of Corona?

Is it safe to order takeout for delivery during the time of corona?

Firstly, you want to be sure you are ordering your food from a reputable restaurant that you trust to ensure that food handlers are following the required safety guidelines set out by the WHO and local government. There are however no guarantees.

Secondly, the riskiest part of food deliveries is the person-to-person contact with the delivery person. It is vitally important to adhere to social distancing when your food is delivered. Many restaurants offer contactless delivery now so make sure to stipulate that as a preference when placing your order.

Some of the concerns doing the rounds

Much of the fear of takeout and restaurant meals being delivered during the pandemic has been blown out of proportion, according to the World Health Organization. People may start to panic as a result of the info shared on the internet and on social media.

Here are some of the concerns doing the rounds :-

  • Old stock will be utilised to cook meals.
  • Food packaging may carry the disease.
  • Cold foods are more likely to carry the disease as opposed to hot foods.
  • Delivered food should be heated before being consumed.
  • No social distancing between delivery drivers.
  • Poor hygiene practiced by delivery drivers.

While these statements have neither been confirmed nor denied, lets rather be safe than sorry.

The steps we have decided to take when ordering take out during Corona.

  1. Specify contactless delivery when placing the order.
  2. Practice social distancing when food is delivered.
  3. Transfer the food from the containers to a clean plate and beverages to a glass.
  4. Dispose of or recycle the containers.
  5. Clean the surface where you placed your containers.
  6. Wash or sanitize your hands before you eat.

It is important to keep in mind that as of right now, “there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

In addition to that, there is no conclusive evidence that heating your food is at all necessary.
